ROCK superstar Sir Elton John could be heading for Huddersfield.
The man regarded as one of the entertainment world's top performers is set to headline a gig at the McAlpine Stadium in June.
And organisers of the concert hope he could be followed by more top rock and pop acts.
Sir Elton - currently delighting sell-out crowds in Las Vegas - is due to appear at the McAlpine on June 12, if confirmed.
That date is halfway through the UK leg of a world tour.
He will be following in the footsteps of rock giants REM, The Eagles, Bryan Adams, The Beautiful South and Bon Jovi, who have all headlined at previous sell-out concerts at the stadium.
The concert is expected to be a fitting way of marking the 10th anniversary of the £35m stadium.
Elton John has thrilled millions of fans with his music and his flamboyant style since the early 1970s.
His massive hits include Daniel, Rocket Man, Your Song, Nikita and of course Candle In The Wind, reworked to commemorate the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.
The news that the McAlpine is aiming to host another big-name concert emerged overnight.
Ralph Rimmer, recently appointed as chief executive of Kirklees Stadium Development Ltd, is handling negotiations with the concert promoters.
He said: "We have been working on this for some time and we are hoping to confirm all the details in the very near future.
"We are determined to make this happen. We have wanted to bring major acts back to the Stadium for some time and although not yet confirmed, we are confident about this concert.
"Elton John is certainly one of the biggest acts in the world. It will be great for the Stadium and great for Huddersfield if we can get him here.
"It is the 10th anniversary of the Stadium's opening and I can confirm that we would like to mark that by bringing more events to the venue.
"Hopefully the June 12 concert will not be the only one."
Mr Rimmer paid tribute to the work done by people involved in the negotiations.
The date pencilled in for the concert should have been the weekend when Huddersfield Giants entertained Wigan Warriors.
But now the two clubs have agreed to reverse fixtures.
Sir Elton John is currently playing The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and will be there for a season running through to the beginning of April.
Gigs in Scandinavia in June will be followed by a series of concerts in the UK, including appearances in Bristol and Ipswich.
Tickets for the Bristol concert sold out within days and the Ipswich concert is also expected to attract a capacity audience.
