COLNE Valley Museum faces reducing its opening hours, due to a shortage of volunteers.

Volunteer numbers at the museum at Cliffe Ash in Golcar have dropped over the last 18 months because of illness and retirements.

There are just 16 volunteers manning the museum, a converted weaver's cottage housing memorabilia and information about the history of Colne Valley people, their lives and work.

It opens to the public from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sundays and is available for school groups during the week.

Roger Fielding, the museum's acting chairman, said that if more volunteers were not found the museum may be able to open only one day a week.

He added: "The people who are already giving their time give it generously. It is hard to ask them to take on any more work than they are doing.

"Initially, we need people to just act as stewards for three hours a month, greeting visitors, taking money and so on. But if anyone has expertise in textiles or wants to get more involved in the running of the museum, there will be plenty of opportunities for them."

Anyone who thinks they can help should phone the museum on 01484 659762 between 2pm and 5pm at weekends.
