COMMUTERS were plunged into darkness yesterday when their train stopped in Standedge tunnel.

Passengers were on the busy 8.22am First TransPennine Express service travelling to Scarborough when it ground to a halt for 30 minutes in the tunnel at Marsden.

Morning services from Manchester Airport to Newcastle and Hull were also delayed.

First TransPennine Express is investigating why the emergency brakes were applied.

A spokesman said: “The trains have a safety mechanism which applies the emergency brakes under certain conditions.

“The driver was delayed because he had to contact the signal man to report this and this had a knock-on effect on other services which were slightly delayed.

“These incidents are very few and far between and the reason why is now being looked into.

“We apologise for the delay and any inconvenience this caused to passengers.”
