YOUNG robbers do not realise they could end up behind bars for years for their first crime.

And the consequences of their actions could wreck their job prospects and hopes in life.

Police in Kirklees are worried that offenders do not realise the seriousness of their actions.

They could even be given a life sentence if they use weapons such as knives to steal from victims.

The warning comes as police across Kirklees mount a series of operations to combat street robberies in the run-up to Christmas.

Sgt Lee Harnell said that although there was not a specific problem with robberies in the Kirklees division, over the last few weeks there had been an increased number of incidents which had caused great concern.

He added: "Some of these robberies have been committed by teenagers who appear to be targeting mobile phones.

"These people should realise the seriousness of their actions.

"Many offenders, when convicted - even for the first time - are going to prison for lengthy periods.

"This can have a devastating effect on their families and their career prospects.

"If they commit such an offence, or are involved in doing so, the maximum sentence is life imprisonment.

"Extensive inquiries are going on to track down those responsible for the recent robberies."

Sgt Harnell urged people to take simple crime prevention precautions.

He said: "Don't walk down the street using your mobile phone, if possible.

"Keep your bags zipped up and shopping close to you. If you've just been to the bank, put the money securely away before you leave the building.

"Don't make yourself a target by counting cash while walking about.

"It sounds easy, but taking these relatively simple steps really can prevent you becoming a victim of opportunist crime."
