HUDDERSFIELD'S North Stars Steel Orchestra will tonight defend its national title at London's Notting Hill Carnival.
An estimated 7,000 people will gather for the steel band competition, which marks the beginning of this weekend's massive carnival.
Nine bands are due to play.
A spokesman for the competition organisers said: "The bands will be judged on style, acoustics and how the music is played."
The evening event is the start of Europe's biggest arts and music festival, which is set to attract more than 1m revellers from around the world.
The main event will take place on Monday, when crowds of festival-goers are expected to congregate in the four square mile area of west London.
The annual carnival, which contributes £93m to London's economy, runs in conjunction with a massive police operation that has so far seen 17 arrests.
