HUDDERSFIELD will be transported back in time as historic trains steam into town.

Train enthusiasts are expected to pack the platform at Huddersfield railway station to see the first of a series of Scarborough Flyer services which will call at Huddersfield in the next few weeks.

The train is due to be hauled by the LMS-liveried Pacific class locomotive 6201 Princess Elizabeth.

If all goes to plan it will be at the station at 9.52am next Friday on its journey from Crewe to the Yorkshire resort.

The locomotive promises to be an impressive sight as it hauls The Scarborough Flyer on one of a series of nostalgic weekly August journeys to the Yorkshire seaside resort.

Organised by heritage rail operator The Railway Touring Company, the trips will run every Friday until the end of August.

The locomotive will make its way via York, stopping at several stations along the way before arriving at Scarborough at 12.52.

The trips coincide with the 40th anniversary of British Railways’ last steam service in 1968 and are expected to gain a lot of interest from train enthusiasts.

Nigel Dobbing, managing director of The Railway Touring Company, said: “Last summer more than 5,000 people took one of our summer steam services and, with this special anniversary and the high cost of petrol, we are expecting at least as many people to choose steam rail rather than their car for a day out this year.”

Tickets are still available for the special trips. Call The Railway Touring Company on 01553 661500 or visit www.railwaytouring.co.uk for more information or to make a reservation.

What was to have been the first of the Scarborough Flyer trains, due to be pulled by 1937-built A4 Gresley Pacific steam locomotive Union Of South Africa, today was cancelled. The locomotive needed its brick arch replacing and was not available to haul the train.
