A Brockholes man hadn’t cut his hair for five years. He finally had his dreadlocks chopped for a children’s charity. Neil Atkinson reports
BRAVE Huddersfield man Steve Nash had his first haircut in five years – in the name of charity and with a pair of garden shears!
He had his 15-inch-long dreadlocks chopped off to create a shorter hairstyle and raise money for Railway Children – a charity that helps street kids around the world.
Steve, whose dreadlocks formed naturally after not brushing his hair for five years, agreed to get his locks cut eight inches shorter on his birthday and hopes to raise £1,000.
So far his friends have pledged a total of £150 on his charity website www.justgiving.com/dreadlocks.
But clever website designer Steve, who was 44 on Saturday is hoping to boost funds even further with his hilarious youtube video recording: “The Story of Steve’s Dreadlocks.”
With music playing in the background, Steve tells the unique story of his hair with a story and film of 38 slides.
Steve, of Brockholes, said: “The dreads formed by not having a hair cut or combing it. They sort of appeared one day out of the blue, as if by magic. I didn’t twizzle or twirl my hair or do anything to make the dreadlocks – they just appeared one day. I was very surprised!
“But I just let my hair grow and grow and never brushed it ever again. They just grew thicker and more determined.”
The haircut, by friend Ricky South, was at Steve’s birthday bash in Verve bar.
“All my friends and family were there and I have asked everyone to donate money to the charity instead of buying me presents.
“I actually found this whole hair-cutting exercise a little traumatic. But the money we raised made it all worth it.”
Terina Keene, Chief Executive of Railway Children, praised Steve for thinking up such an ingenious way to help the charity.
She said: “He is aiming to raise around £1,000 which is wonderful news as these funds will be used to help save the lives of vulnerable street children around the world.”
