PETROL prices in Huddersfield remain among the cheapest in the country - despite this week's rise in fuel duty.

A fall in the price of petrol on world markets helped cushion the blow of the rise in fuel duty, said Chris Stern, of Paddock- based petrol retailer C J Stern (Oils) Ltd.

He said: "The supermarkets led the way by saying they were going to absorb the increase, rather than pass it on to customers.

"World prices have fallen and that means prices at the pumps have not risen, despite the increase in duty."

But he warned that a worldwide "imbalance" in fuel production could lead to a shortage of diesel in November and December.

Figures from the AA showed that the price of unleaded and diesel in Huddersfield remains below the national average following the duty increase.

The lowest price for unleaded petrol in the town stands at 72.5p a litre with the average at 74.54p. That compares with an average of 76.26p for the UK as a whole.

The lowest price for diesel is 73.5p with the average for the town at 75.60p and the UK average at 77.62p.

The increase in fuel duty has angered hauliers, who say it adds £1,000 a year to the cost of running a lorry.
