A BRIGHOUSE councillor is set to be the next Mayor of Calderdale.

Independent councillor Colin Stout (pictured) has been nominated to take on the role when Rastrick councillor John Williamson ends his year of office in May.

Clr Stout, who will be Calderdale's first Independent mayor, has represented the Brighouse ward since 2000.

He said he was delighted and honoured to take on the mayoral duties and he wanted to use the year to acknowledge the work done by Calderdale's unsung heroes.

"I promise a mayoral year with a difference," said Clr Stout. "I want to raise the profile of people such as refuse collectors and lollipop men and women - the people who make a difference to our everyday lives."

Before he takes up the role, he has to retain his seat representing Brighouse at the May elections.

Clr Stout's wife Ann will be mayoress and Clr Allen Clegg is likely to be the deputy Mayor.
