A SCHEME to help weekend revellers in Huddersfield has taken on 11 new recruits.

The volunteers will join members of the Huddersfield Street Angels next month.

The group was set-up to offer a caring and helping presence in the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights.

The new volunteers have completed courses in first aid, drugs and alcohol awareness, listening skills and have received training from the police.

They join 40 volunteers from churches around the town.

New recruit Richard Berry, 30, said:

“I felt this was a way I could give something back and make a difference in the community.”

Rev Dr Anna Wallis, assistant curate of Huddersfield Parish Church, said: “We’re delighted to welcome so many new volunteers.

“This is a fantastic project and a great opportunity for the church to serve the community in a very practical way.”
