Part of Newsome has tonight been sealed off after a double stabbing.

Two teenagers have been hurt in the incident which happened just after 6pm.

The incident happened close to Boozebusters on Church Lane and the scene has now been preserved so police forensic experts and detectives can gather evidence.

It is understood that two boys aged around 16 have suffered knife wounds.

It is not known how seriously hurt they are but a police spokesman has confirmed they have been taken by ambulances to Leeds General Infirmary.

A lot of youths congregated in the street at about that time but have now been moved on by officers.

A police spokesman confirmed the inquiry is in its early stages but officers are not thought to be looking for anyone else in connection to what happened at this stage.

Officers have appealed for anyone who saw what happened or who has any information to contact them via the main switchboard number quoting log reference 1353 of December 17.

It is understood the West Yorkshire Police helicopter hovered over the area in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

An Examiner reader contacted us to say: “I saw the police helicopter from my bedroom window in Lowerhouses ... had a searchlight going before landing.”

West Yorkshire Police Duty Inspector, Detective Inspector Simon Brooks, said: "We're appealing for witnesses and would like to speak to anyone in the area who saw what happened.

"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

"Inquiries are ongoing."

Officers are conducting house to house inquiries and the cordon may remain in place overnight
