A MAN who tried to drown himself in a river was suffering from stress and depression, an inquest heard.

Ismail Seedat, 52, of Savile Town, Dewsbury, died three days after throwing himself into the River Calder, near the Asda superstore in the town, on October 9.

Indian-born Mr Seedat had been rescued from the river but died in Dewsbury District Hospital after his brain was starved of oxygen while he was under water, Huddersfield Coroner’s Court was told.

The court heard married Mr Seedat had lost his job and had been suffering from insomnia.

Recording a verdict that Mr Seedat had taken his life, Coroner Roger Whittaker said: “It seems to me he entered the water for one purpose only and that was to drown himself.”
