A BUSINESS with 50 years of history in Huddersfield could end up being replaced with student accommodation.

Aspley Autoparts on Firth Street has applied for planning permission for flats with solar panels and heat recovery units.

Holmfirth-based GCM Developments has applied to Kirklees Council on behalf of the business for planning permission to create the block of 57 flats on the business site.

Owner Milton Hartley said the business had been founded by his father, Tony, 50 years ago and would be marking its golden jubilee in December.

He said this year had been a difficult one for traders.

"A lot of retailers have been struggling, especially in our type of business,’’ he said.

"We are running the business as normal but decided to apply for planning permission to possibly increase the value of the site if we decided to sell.’’

The business sells a large variety of autoparts and accessories for the motorist.
