PLANS for student accommodation for 653 people have been submitted for a site next to the River Colne.

The 0.74 hectare site off Colne Road, Newsome, will be transformed with communal student facilities, car parking and a river walkway.

It is currently used as a car park and much of the area proposed for development is a former works site.

An application to Kirklees Council says that the student accommodation will be in four blocks of between four and seven storeys high.

They’ll be located around a central landscaped courtyard with a bridge linking Commercial Street and King’s Bridge Road, within a minute’s walk of Huddersfield University.

A public consultation has previously taken place with around 650 local residents and businesses commenting on the proposals.

The majority of respondents, 76%, considered that the site is in need of redevelopment and 93% considered that the site is a suitable and sustainable location for student accommodation.

The applicant, Watkin Jones and Son, said in the report: “The results of the consultation have been thoroughly analysed, discussed with the local planning authority and incorporated into the design when this has been considered beneficial to the development.”

The proposed site is bound by the River Colne to the south and east, Commercial Street to the north and King’s Bridge Road to the west.

A public consultation runs until November 5 and it is expected a decision will be made by early December.
