A LISTED building will be turned into student housing.

Planners gave the green light yesterday to the conversion of Spring Lodge in Longroyd Bridge.

The Grade II listed building off Woodthorpe Terrace will house 12 students.

Kirklees Council’s Huddersfield planning sub-committee approved the proposal, which also includes building five townhouses on the site.

Clr Adrian Murphy spoke in favour of converting the derelict early 19th Century two-storey building. The Kirkburton Conservative said: “It’s a beautiful old building that needs to be brought back into use.”

Each townhouse will have its own parking space, but there is no parking provision for the student housing.

Clr Andrew Cooper, who represents the area, said this was a concern.

The Newsome Green councillor said: “There’s an assumption in the plan that there won’t be any vehicles because it’s student accommodation. However, students do have cars, which I find amazing from my student days.”

Clr Cooper added this could cause problems on nearby Woodthorpe Terrace. He said: “It’s extremely likely that new vehicles will come as a result of this application which will make life increasingly difficult for residents.”
