THE DANGERS of fire and gas and the importance of home security have been highlighted at Huddersfield University.
Student Safety Awareness Week gives information on a range of topics, including fire and gas, personal safety, home security and how to stay safe while drinking.
Throughout this week, which has been organised by the Students’ Union, students will be able to get advice and talk to experts about their concerns as well as watch demonstrations and safety videos by the police and fire brigade.
The university runs safety weeks every year when freshers start as well as various events throughout the year.
Police officers Gary Moor and Dave Makinson were on hand to give advice and short demonstrations to students to help them keep safe and reduce crime rates.
Mr Makinson said: “When students are drinking and staying away from home for the first time they may be letting their guards down. But to keep safe they need to be alert for potential dangers at all times.
“There are lots of simple things you can do to keep safe, regardless of your gender, size or strength.
“One of the most important things you can do is just be aware of your surroundings, who you are with and how to get out of a situation if it becomes dangerous.
“Simple things like always letting someone know where you are and letting them know if your plans change to – especially for girls– having a panic alarm with you can all help keep you safe.’’
