HAIRDRESSING students will be able to practise their skills on customers in Huddersfield town centre if plans to set up a new salon get the go-ahead.

Huddersfield Technical College has applied for planning permission to open a hair and beauty salon at the Cherry Tree Centre, at the corner of Market Street and Westgate.

It has been chosen to offer customers a more convenient location.

It will give those learning hairdressing at the college more salon space to work in and the opportunity to meet a different client base.

The site was previously occupied by an insurance brokers.

If permission is granted by Kirklees Council, the salon should be open by September 2005.

Melanie Brooke, vice-principal for corporate services at Huddersfield Technical College, said: "Our hairdressing courses are very popular and to accommodate the large growth in applications we require additional salon space.

"This extra salon will enhance our learners' hairdressing and customer service skills as it is in a more convenient location for the general public.

"This should lead to a larger and more varied number of clients to work on.

"In addition to hairdressing services provided on the first floor, we also hope to offer specialist short courses in beauty therapy and holistics on the second floor of the shop."

Students at present use the HD One training salon on the campus at New North Road.
