HUDDERSFIELD University will open its new £4m Student Union building when term starts on Monday.

The building is on the Queensgate campus, not far from the union's old home, Milton Hall.

Milton Hall - the former Milton Congregational, then United Reformed, Church - is being transformed into a theatre studies building. It is expected to be ready in June.

The new Student Union building has two storeys.

On the ground floor, there is an advice and information centre for students and a shop.

The ground floor also houses a 500-capacity bar called The Venue, which boasts a stage and state of the art sound and lighting system.

The second floor contains The Lounge, a relaxed smoke and alcohol- free area. The Lounge is also easily accessible for disabled students.

The union - which is run by a committee of elected students and full-time staff - offers students the chance to join 40 societies, sporting clubs and community volunteering projects.

It can even provide part-time jobs to give students spare cash.

Its new building will be officially opened by university Vice-Chancellor Prof John Tarrant, Student Union president Tom Johnson and players from Huddersfield Giants rugby league team, which is sponsored by the university. Tom Johnson said: "This new building is a great move forward for the Student Union.

"It will provide a friendly and flexible place for years to come."

To mark the opening night on Monday, a Robbie Williams tribute act will put The Venue's facilities through their paces.

Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs will then perform at The Venue next Friday.
