GAVIN Sykes and Elliott Berry have a way with figures.

The Holmfirth High School students both took part in the UK Junior Maths Challenge.

They did so well they were invited to take part in the higher level Maths Olympiad - and both received certificates.

Their results put them among the top 1% of the entrants in the country.

Another group of children from the school also took part in the intermediate level, which involved pupils in years nine to 11.

And as a result of their achievement four of them were invited to sit the International Maths Olympiad Kangaroo Pink Standard test. They each got a certificate.

Pupil Lizz Paley did exceptionally well and sat the even higher level International Maths Olympiad MacLaurin standard.

Head teacher Mr Len Barson said: "It's the first time the school has had so many successes."
