THOUSANDS of students are arriving in Huddersfield to study at the town’s university – and some have already fallen victim to crime.

Two have had their accommodation burgled, losing expensive electrical items.

Another has been attacked and had his mobile phone stolen.

Police are anxious that all new arrivals pay heed to important but simple crime prevention messages.

Never go out of your accommodation and leave the door unlocked or the window ajar.

One student lost an MP3 player, a Sony Playstation, a laptop and a mobile phone in a sneak-in burglary.

Don’t forget that if your laptop goes so could all your coursework.

And if you’re walking back home late at night stay as a group and don’t go down lonely roads by yourself.

Police have set up a Safer Walk Route with signs around Huddersfield town centre to guide new students round the main roads and back to their accommodation.

It takes in the student accommodation on King’s Mill Lane at Aspley, Firth Street, Colne Road, Chapel Hill, Queensgate and a small part of Wakefield Road.

Students can log on to the latest crime prevention tips on West Yorkshire Police’s website, www.westyorkshire.police.uk

It also has access to 999TV, featuring a short film on crime prevention advice.

There is also the chance to enter a prize draw to win £200 shopping vouchers, plus a special category for students to send in their best 20-second video clip via a mobile phone of a safety tip for use on the website.

The student site contains advice on property marking, how to look after mobile phones and other expensive electronic equipment, along with simple tips on personal safety.
