TEENAGERS at a Huddersfield school performed a piece of theatre to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Entitled: What’s Love Got To Do With It? the show was aimed at breaking the silence around the issue.

The production at All Saints Catholic College at Bradley Bar consisted of a series of five mini plays with different themes including forced marriage, controlling behaviour, bullying and sexual violence.

The 25 Year 10 students performed, produced and directed the show as part of their Performance and Arts BTEC studies.

It featured both male and female characters with the aim of challenging stereotypes.

The students were helped by the Pennine Domestic Violence Group. Several members – and victims of domestic violence – watched the performance.

Also in the audience were the rest of Year 10 and officials from West Yorkshire Police, Kirklees Young People’s Service and the NHS.

Mrs Fiona Evans, leader of the Creative and Expressive Arts Faculty, said the students had created work of real value and handled difficult subjects with great maturity.

She added: “If just one audience member takes just one thing away with them after watching this piece, let it be that help is out there.

“There are so many local and national organisations waiting to help those in need.

“As the characters in our play say ‘it doesn’t have to be this way.’”

The production could be recorded on DVD and used as an educational tool.
