Students and staff at a Brighouse school are again taking learning to the extreme.

Last year a pupil and teacher at the William Henry School climbed Everest as part of an Extreme Classroom project.

Next month four students and four staff will take to education on two wheels on a cycling expedition around Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain.

Student Josh Simpson and teacher Barrie Campbell scaled the heights to reach the Everest base camp last year.

The success of that initiative, across a network of Engage in their Future schools, has meant that the William Henry School has been chosen as the organising school for the cycling challenge.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will take place over a week in September.

Students Josh Noble, Aaron Thomis, Jack Smith and Kieran Regan and their four mentors Rachel Hussey, Barrie Campbell, Gavin Moody and Laura Kelsey will ride through some of the most spectacular scenery in France, Switzerland and Italy.

From potentially hot and sunny conditions at the lower altitudes, there will be the possibility of sleet and snow as the route reaches 2,469 metres.

In total the expedition team will include up to 20 students from years 9, 10 and 11 who will attempt to cycle the 350km (217 miles) course in four days.

There will also be three non-cycling students to be included in the support team along with their staff mentors.

They will be assisting in the crucial role of preparing and fixing bikes, setting up feeding stations and generally contributing to all the tasks that will ensure the challenge will be successful.

The riders will take in nine major Tour de France climbs.

The Brighouse pupils and staff will also be joined by chairman of governors Roger Tilbrook.

At the end of the four days a celebration meal at the foot of Mont Blanc will be cooked by celebrity chef Anthony Worrell Thompson.
