STUDENTS in Huddersfield are getting a fair deal when it comes to paying for accommodation, a survey shows today.

The most expensive places for students to live in the UK are in London, Oxford and Glasgow, with the lowest in Crewe, Middlesbrough and Stoke.

Huddersfield is 12% below average with a weekly rent of about £46.

Moldgreen, Longroyd Bridge, Newsome and Edgerton are the most popular student areas.

But a spokesman for the University of Huddersfield's accommodation office said the average rent charged by private landlords which register with them is £39 per room per week.

The survey was conducted by web site company www.accommodationforstudents.com and was based on 14,000 properties in 54 university locations across the country.

The average weekly rent for a student in the UK is £52.44 but in London students can expect to pay an average of £102 per week - almost double the national average.

If money is a big issue for students, the survey suggests studying in traditional redbrick university towns like Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham and Leicester, which all have below average rents.

Places such as Eastbourne, Kent, Brighton, Reading and Winchester are all well above average.

William Berry, co-founder and director of Accommodation for Students, said: "With the Government's policy change on tuition fees becoming a major new factor in the cost of being a full-time student in the future, the price of accommodation will increasingly be a major cost consideration.

"We may well see students choosing universities based on the cost of accommodation as much as curricular availability or academic reputation."
