THOUSANDS of students are celebrating in Huddersfield this week.

They are collecting their degrees from the University of Huddersfield in a series of glittering ceremonies.

And the students, who come from every corner of the world, have also been rubbing shoulders with the famous.

The University has awarded a number of honorary degrees and those were being collected this week.

Among the recipients of the honorary degrees are actor and theatre boss Barrie Rutter, businessman and former Town chairman Graham Leslie, the woman who founded the National Children's Centre in Huddersfield, Hazel Wigmore, and Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati.

Famous names from the world of sport are also among the honorary recipients.

Darren Gough, the England test cricketer, and former Huddersfield Olympic swimmer Anita Lonsbrough both get a Doctorate of Civil Law.

There was also a posthumous award for Huddersfield educationalist Malcolm Lee.

And there was a poignant award for former West Yorkshire Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn, who is battling cancer.

Prof Tim Boatswain, the University's pro vice chancellor, said this had been an `excellent' year for the university.

It had recruited to its targets, and in this year's National Student Survey, compiled by a Government agency, Huddersfield had emerged as the top new university for student satisfaction.
