STUDENTS have given thousands of books to children in Africa.

The Huddersfield University students collected 13,000 textbooks from schools in Yorkshire.

Kirsty Maclean, 21, Kirsty Clark, 21, and Lucy Wardle, 22 then travelled to Tanzania to distribute the books. They were joined by Sabina Brimson, 21, from Nottingham University.

In three weeks they distributed all of the books, boxes of chalk, new dictionaries and footballs and netballs to 20 secondary schools, the district library and the teacher training college in the remote western district of Rukwa.

Kirsty Maclean said: “It was the most rewarding experience. I will never forget the smiles we have put on so many faces, the difference we have made to people’s education and the sights that we have seen.

“I have a different understanding of the value of life since I returned. It has developed me just as much as the people I have been out there helping.”

The students raised £7,000 to cover the costs of the trip with a series of events at Huddersfield University from September, 2007.
