OVER 180 school pupils from Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield were at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Leeds for a Step Into Sport community volunteering conference.

The Step Into Sport programme is designed to get young people involved in sport.

It provides accreditation and recognition for the volunteers through SIS awards and enhances career and job prospects.

The conference was opened by Marcus Strudwick, 16, a SIS student who is one of the country's budding football referees.

He took part in an FA young leaders' camp, which developed his knowledge of football

He was then picked to go to the FA's international relations team, where he took part in the Changing Lives programme to help people in Africa.

Experts from around the region delivered a number of sport-related workshops.

Subjects covered included movement skills, sports journalism, team management and career pathways in sport.
