COMMEMORATIVE plates and Christmas cards have been produced to celebrate Shelley winning the title of Yorkshire Village of the Year.

Shelley was awarded the title in July for its strong community spirit and local facilities.

Shelley Community Association, who co-ordinated the village's entry, have now commissioned 250 limited edition plates to mark its success.

The 10-inch English bone china plates were designed by Skelmanthorpe artist Jenny Hinchliffe.

They show a central scene of villagers around Shelley's Millenium Stone, with scenes from activities in the village around the outside.

Jenny said: "The scenes were done in July, when the community got the award. We thought it would be a good idea to do Christmas cards with the same scenes, but at winter time."

The plates and cards are on sale at Shelley Stores or by contacting Community Association member Malcolm McDonald on 01484 609032.

They are priced £17.50 and the cards cost £1.

All profits from the sales will go to the Community Association to fund future projects in Shelley.

Mr McDonald said: "It is a generous gesture by Jenny because she's giving the money that she could be getting to the community.

"The plates and cards provide a historical snapshot of Shelley at the time we won the award."
