TWO children are all smiles after winning a dental health competition.

Shayann Raza and Mohammed Adnan, from Thornton Lodge Nursery, won a competition to design a lunchbox.

The competition, which took place at nurseries in Thornton Lodge and Lockwood, was organised by Huddersfield's two primary care trusts as part of National Smile Month.

National Smile Month, run by the British Dental Association, ran from May 14 to June 13 and aimed to raise awareness of how good dental habits and a healthy diet can promote good oral health.

As part of the campaign, the trusts brought in oral health educators from Calderdale and Kirklees Community Dental Services, South Huddersfield Primary Care Trust and the Government's SureStart programme.

Together with players from the Huddersfield Giants rugby league team, they visited primary schools and nurseries to give dental advice.

Children were also treated to food tasting sessions and puppet shows.

Goody bags were given out to children at dental clinics and oral health events were held at Morrisons supermarket in Meltham and at the Co-op in Holmfirth.

Shayann and Mohammed each received a goody box from Giants community coach Mick Sykes, who was accompanied by the Giants' mascot Big G.

The other children who entered the competition had their lunchboxes returned, filled with fruit. Sarah Wimpenny, dental nurse and project worker for SureStart, said: "The children enjoyed taking part in our competition and they were all creative in their designs."
