A CRACKDOWN on nuisance bikers by taking them on, on their own turf is paying dividends.

Kirklees’ own biker bobbies, PCs Nigel Law and Andrew Money, have been on the streets – and fields – of the region for three months.

And in that time they have responded to nearly 500 incidents and taken action against dozens of offending riders.

The Kirklees Off-Road Bike Unit started work in May with the intention of responding to any reports of nuisance motorcycles across the region. With 493 calls for their services in 12 weeks, the pair have certainly been kept busy.

During this time, they have seized 12 motorcycles under the Road Traffic Act and reported their owners for summons by the courts.

They have also issued 34 warnings to people found using their vehicles in an anti-social manner.

In addition to this work, the officers have also been helping police other road traffic offences and helped find two missing children in the Thornhill Lees area of Dewsbury.

The youngsters, aged two and three, had gone missing from their home on Ouzelwell Lane and had been missing for an hour until Nigel and Andrew found them in the fields off Ravensthorpe Road and returned them to their grateful parents.

Pc Law said: “We are very mobile unit, able to respond to a variety of calls.

“So, while our main remit is to tackle the anti-social use of off-road motorcycles in Kirklees, we are still able to help other departments with their work as and when required.

“In this case, we were in the right place at the right time and were very pleased to be able to get these young children back home safely”.

The call-outs have taken them across the whole of Kirklees.

There have been 50 calls to the Holmfirth area, 77 to Fartown and Sheepridge, 74 to Dalton and Almondbury and 23 to Denby Dale and Kirkburton.

There were 121 callouts in the Spen Valley and 108 in Dewsbury.

The pair will continue to work across the region until at least September.

Anyone who is aware of anti-social biking issues in their area is asked to report the matter to their local Neighbourhood Policing team via 0845 6060606.
