SUMMER has finally hit Huddersfield.

But it has brought its share of problems.

Now we are urging people to ensure they don’t fall foul of opportunist thieves, looking to take advantage of the warm weather.

Sneak-in burglaries, as well as thefts from motor vehicles, can increase during the summer months when opportunist thieves try to take advantage of doors and windows being left open.

With the recent warm spell, we are keen to highlight the issue before they start to see an increase in reports.

My colleague, Superintendent Ian Gayles of Kirklees police, is anxious that people can enjoy the weather without falling victim to a thief.

He said: “We have experienced some very warm weather this week and no doubt this weekend people will be out and about enjoying the sunshine.

“However, we want people to remember that when they leave their cars with the windows open, or are in the garden with doors and windows left unlocked, they are offering thieves easy pickings.

“A handbag, wallet, mobile phone or keys left next to an unlocked front door or open window can present an incredibly easy target for opportunist burglars who can take them in just a few seconds. The message couldn’t be simpler. Lock your door or risk losing out to crime.

“Whilst burglary is still a top priority for Kirklees police, we need the help of local residents to help reduce it.

“There are a number of things people can do to prevent a sneak-in theft, such as locking all of your home’s doors and windows when working in the garden or garage. Using a simple security chain from DIY stores is another option.

“You should also never leave keys in the locks of doors or windows as these can be exploited. Also, avoid leaving valuables near windows, for example mobile phones, handbags, jewellery, expensive ornaments and keys as these can act as an advertisement for a potential criminal.

“This applies to cars, just as much as to your homes, so we also want motorists to heed this advice.”
