The paternal family of Summer Mai Rogers-Ratcliffe has slammed a police investigation into the toddler's killing.

Speaking for the Ratcliffe family, Summer's grandfather James Ratcliffe described West Yorkshire Police's investigation as 'flawed, incompetent and at best, lazy'.

Mr Ratcliffe's son Joss, who was Summer's dad - broke up with the toddler's mum Victoria Rogers three months after the child was born.

Summer was killed by a blow to the head at her Dewsbury home, on February 27, 2012, an inquest at Bradford Coroner's Court concluded today.

The 21-month-old died at Leeds General Infirmary the following day.

Wrapping up the inquest, Assistant Coroner Oliver Longstaff recorded a verdict of unlawful killing and called for a fresh investigation into the toddler's death.

James Ratcliffe said he and his family had found themselves fighting against the justice system to get answers.

He said: "If this investigation had been carried out properly someone may already be behind bars.

"Many questions need to be answered in a police investigation which is, in our view, flawed, incompetent and at best, lazy.

Mr Ratcliffe said he had been concerned for Summer's safety after the infant was badly scalded in 2011.

He said: "Summer also was failed on more than one occasion by the many organisations and people who were there supposedly to protect her.

"When this campaign began we were simply fighting for justice. It does seem now that we are not only fighting for it but also fighting against this."

Mr Ratcliffe added: "The fight just continues. We know it isn't going to be a short process."

West Yorkshire Police today defended the investigation.

Det Chf Insp Jon Morgan, of Protective Services, said: "The death of Summer Mai was a tragedy.

"A detailed and thorough investigation was carried out at the time of her death and the evidence gathered as part of that enquiry was used during the inquest.

"Our enquiries included seeking the opinion of a number of medical experts.

"A comprehensive case file was then submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service who reviewed all of the evidence and decided there was insufficient evidence to bring charges against any individual.

"In cases such as this our investigations always remain open and are reviewed pending any new evidence or information coming to light."

Danny Ratcliffe, Joss’s cousin, will be running the Leeds 10k on Sunday for the Justice for Summer Mai campaign.
