The mother of a 21-month-old toddler who died from a head injury told police she had nothing to do with it.

Dewsbury tot Summer Mai Rogers-Ratcliffe died in the early hours of February 28, 2012.

Medical experts agree her mystery death was caused by a blunt force impact to the head.

Her mother, Victoria Rogers, boyfriend Craig Sharp and grandmother Susan Rogers were arrested on suspicion of murder but never charged after investigators decided they had insufficient evidence.

Today details of Victoria’s police interview under caution in September 2012 were aired in public for the first time.

Pathologists said if Victoria’s statement that the tot had been fine when she gave her milk at 5.30am on Monday, February 27 was true then the injury must have occurred after that and before she was found collapsed by Susan Rogers at 8.30am.

Asked by detectives if she had made up the 5.30am feed or done anything to harm her daughter, she responded: “I did not touch my baby girl.”

“Are you responsible for the impact?” asked a detective.

“No, I gave her a bottle then I went to work,” she said.

“Somebody got Summer up after I gave that bottle and somebody hurt her.”

The court heard that Victoria went to work at Bradford Royal Infirmary at 5.45am and “nothing seemed out of order.”

Craig was asleep when she left and her mother Susan was coming to take over before he left for work at about 7.45am.

She said she had no concerns about Craig’s ability to look after her daughter.

But at 9am she received a phone call from her brother-in-law Tony Bates telling her to rush to Dewsbury A&E.

She told officers she could hear ambulance sirens and Tony’s heavy breathing, at which point she blacked out.

Summer was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary but was declared brain dead.

She was taken off life support in the early hours of Tuesday, February 28.

Earlier in the day at Bradford Coroner’s Court, family members’ statements to police about Summer’s health in the days leading up to her tragic death were read out.

Valerie Sharp, the mother of Victoria’s then boyfriend Craig Sharp, told investigators that Summer had been ill when she looked after her on the morning of Friday, February 24.

She said she had been sick four times and she’d had to get Victoria home from work to take her home

Valerie also told police Summer had “thrown herself on the floor” but said it wasn’t a violent bang.

Summer’s father, Joss Ratcliffe’s statement revealed he had split with Victoria three months after Summer was born and agreed to pay £200 a month to Victoria.

He had access to see Summer on Wednesdays and every other weekend.

He said Victoria was a good mum in general but he had been concerned when Summer got a serious scald to her hand.

“It was strange because Victoria was so vague about it, “ he told the police.

Yesterday the court heard from a burns expert that the scald was probably from an accidental dip into a cup of hot liquid.

Mr Ratcliffe said he did not know if any investigation had occurred but said Summer’s child minder had also raised concerns with social services.
