A PROFESSIONAL rugby league player has been killed in a car crash.

Gareth Swift, who played for Division One side Featherstone Rovers, died when a car he was in came off the road on Wakefield Road in Normanton on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old hooker was a passenger in a car being driven by team-mate Charlie Tosh.

Insp David Whitehouse, force duty officer for West Yorkshire Police, said: "The vehicle had lost control following an overtaking manoeuvre at speed while entering a left-hand bend.

"The driver had lost control of the vehicle and left the road, landing on its roof."

Mr Swift died at the scene from his injuries.

Mr Tosh was taken to hospital after the 10.50pm incident, where his condition was described as critical but stable.
