A NEW continental-style tram-train could be tested on tracks between Huddersfield and Sheffield.

The Penistone Line has been earmarked as a test line for the tram-trains with a service between Sheffield and Huddersfield via Barnsley.

But even if it does go ahead, it could be five years before we see any action on the tram-train as the Department for Transport has said the Rotherham line will be the first phase.

Peter Marshall from the Huddersfield and Penistone Rail Users Association said: “We are disappointed that the much needed investment in the Penistone Line has been postponed.

“It could be five years before we see anything on this line.”

The Department for Transport made the announcement yesterday.

Tram-trains are greener than conventional trains as they use less fuel and have faster acceleration and deceleration rates.

The trial will assess the environmental benefits, operating costs and suitability of the tram-trains as well as testing how popular the vehicles are with passengers before considering whether to roll them out throughout the UK.
