IF running for the bus to work is the most exercise you get, think of office worker Martin Deans.

The superfit events coordinator at Kirklees College ran a marathon before he even got into the office – all in the name of Sport Relief.

Father-of-two Martin, 37, who lives in Slaithwaite, wanted to devise his own personal challenge to raise cash for the charity.

So he decided a 26.2-mile route taking in many of the college centres before returning to his New North Road office was a good idea.

Martin, who has never run a full marathon before, but who ran a half marathon in one hour 30 minutes, started at Holmfirth adult education centre at 8.30am, running to the Taylor Hill centre, main New North Road campus and Highfields Centre, then onto Leeds Road to Brunel House Centre. He continued his journey to Batley, Wheelwright centre and Dewsbury centre before completing his run at the college’s new Ossett centre.

He completed the distance in an impressive two hours 55 minutes.

“I have done a half marathon distance a few times but I’ve never done a full marathon before and am really chuffed with my time,” said Martin.

“I hoped my three years of triathlon and current training for an ironman event in August would get me through it okay.

“Whatever happened I needed to be back at my desk by lunchtime to start work!”

Martin cycled home after completing the challenge and was ready to continue his preparations for his ironman event in August.

That includes a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle ride and 26 mile marathon in Nottingham.

Martin and colleagues at the college are also taking part in a coast to coast challenge on Friday, also to raise further funds for Sports Relief.

He has already raised around £300.
