SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons today warned 2,500 jobs could be lost after a review concluded three of its depots may no longer be needed.

The Bradford-based company said its distribution centres in Kent, Bristol and Warrington were at risk of closure.

Workers would be urged to apply for other jobs with the company in a bid to keep redundancies to a minimum.

The announcement was made as talks resumed with the GMB and Transport and General Workers Union in a bid to resolve a dispute over job security.

The unions suspended a strike due to start yesterday so that talks could continue.

Morrisons, which has stores at Waterloo and Meltham, said the company had too much capacity at its depots.

It said the depots were designed to serve 600 stores, but the company had been forced by competition authorities to sell 200 stores following its takeover of rival supermarket chain Safeway.
