CAGE fighting - a sport banned in Huddersfield - was given backing yesterday by boxing legend Mike Tyson.
Tyson is to act as a referee in the World Cage Fighting Championship, taking place this weekend at the Manchester MEN arena.
And Huddersfield brothers Ian and Dave Butlin will be among the contestants.
Plans for a show in Huddersfield Sports Centre were thwarted by a ban.
A spokesperson for Kirklees Active Leisure said: "There are concerns over the lack of an official governing body for the sport."
But Tyson insisted yesterday: "I think the sport will undoubtedly catch on. There is no doubt that it will eventually rival boxing with its success.
"With regards to myself competing again, I feel that I am past that now and enjoy just watching people compete."
Tyson, who says he is a huge fan of the sport, talked of the respect he had for the fighters and the skill and dedication the sport requires.
He said: "I have a great deal of admiration for the fighters who are competing in such a complex and highly skilled sport.
"I love coming to England and always receive a great reception from the people. I am truly honoured to be a part of this event."
The pre-tournament event was attended by Olympic silver medallist Amir Khan as well as Tyson.
