KIRKLEES is well-served by GP surgeries, a survey has found.

The figures were released by Britain's general union, the GMB, at a Brighton conference which raised concern about the 18th reorganisation of NHS management in three years.

The figures show Kirklees has 68 practices - the fifth highest of any area in Yorkshire and Humberside.

The highest figures reflect concentrations of population - Leeds has most, with 154, followed by Sheffield with 115.

The smallest number is 44 in North East Lincolnshire.

Proposals to encourage health authorities to merge the primary care trusts which oversee GP services came under attack at the conference.

Brian Strutton, GMB national secretary for public services, said: "This will be the 18th reorganisation of the NHS management and structure in three years.

"All of the staff, including members represented by the GMB, would dearly welcome a period of stability.

"This would enable them to get on with the job of looking after their patients and providing a first-class service."

Concerns were also raised that the proposals could open the door to the private sector providing local health care to compete with GP surgeries.
