A MOLDGREEN surgery is changing its phone number to improve services to patients.

From Thursday this week patients calling the Junction Surgery in Birkhouse Lane will call a new 0844 number to relieve pressure on the main switchboard.

The new number will be charged at low call rates and offer patients a series of options.

Margaret Turner, the surgery's office manager, said: "Our patients told us that they were frustrated by repeatedly hearing the engaged tone when they tried to contact the surgery, particularly during the morning rush.

"Our new number and telecommunications equipment will relieve pressure on the switchboard by introducing extra lines and some call automation."

The new number coincides with guidelines set out by the Government this year which banned the NHS from using premium and national rate telephone numbers for patients contacting local services.

All surgeries using high cost numbers were told to change their numbers to low call rates.

Patients dialling the old number at the surgery after the cut-off date will hear a recorded message detailing the new number.

The new number will be 0844 477 2421.
