THREE pals ended up in hospital - after a two-hour fun swim in Huddersfield. The boys had to be treated at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for the effects of chlorine.

They spent three hours in the hospital's accident and emergency unit after the half-term swim session at Huddersfield Sports Centre.

But staff at the Centre insisted they had carried out several checks to ensure chlorine levels in the water were safe.

Christopher Morrell, 10, and his friends Jonathan and Daniel Koulouris, aged 12 and 10, went for the Fun Swim session at the centre on Tuesday afternoon.

The boys all live at Shepherds Grove, Deighton, and are on their half-term break. Christopher's mum Mrs Rachel Morrell said she and the two brothers' mum Mrs Ann Koulouris had been pestered to let them go.

Mrs Morrell said: "They spent a little more than two hours in the water, playing on the equipment with dozens of other kids, and got out of the pool about 4.30pm.

"Christopher said there were only two showers so they didn't have one but when they got home he said his tummy was red and hurting.

"I thought it was because he had been playing on the equipment, but within an hour his eyes were streaming and he said he hurt all over. I spoke to Ann and she said her two were the same, so I called an ambulance.

"They came within minutes, with a paramedic, and straight away he told us we had to get the boys to the Infirmary. The boys had to have their eyes washed out.

"The doctors told us they were suffering from the effects of chlorine."

All three boys are now on Piriton, to deal with the effects of the chlorine.

James Ditchfield, operations manager for Kirklees Active Leisure, said: " Tests on pool water are undertaken at least four times a day at Huddersfield Sports Centre and the chlorine levels maintained at the recommended industry guidelines, to ensure pool quality.

"There were over 400 people visiting the pool that day and no other complaints have been received."
