KATE Winslet and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle were unable to build on recent successes as they missed out on top accolades in the Evening Standard British Film Awards.

Tilda Swinton pipped Winslet to the award for Best Actress for her moving performance as Julia in Erick Zonca’s kidnapping drama Julia.

Winslet has recently enjoyed great success winning awards at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actor’s Guild for her portrayal as a suburban housewife in Revolutionary Road and as a former Nazi concentration camp guard in The Reader.

Boyle’s heart-warming tale has also proved a huge success during the award season and although the director was not a winner last night, his film was honoured when Mark Digby, production designer on Slumdog Millionaire, won a Technical Achievement award.

Boyle was beaten to the Best Director award by Stephen Daldry’s The Reader.

Winslet and Boyle are tipped for further success in the British Academy Awards (Baftas) and Academy Awards (Oscars).
