DOZENS of cars were stopped and checked in a police swoop across Huddersfield.

The initiative run by Target - West Yorkshire's biggest ever crackdown on crime and the fear of crime - used an automatic number plate recognition system.

The system is linked to the police national computer and immediately flags up untaxed vehicles and any which have been linked with crime scenes.

Probationer constables yesterday helped to stop the cars on Manchester Road between Milnsbridge and Thornton Lodge, Lockwood Road in Lockwood and Bradley Road at Fixby.
