Three years ago Ray Laverick and his son Adam sculpted a giant Father Christmas out of snow.

This year the 54-year-old builder decided something warmer and brighter was needed to inspire thoughts of hotter climes, so on Monday he moulded this magnificent sphinx single-handedly.

Ray, a father-of-four, of Ayton Road, Longwood, said: “I was just clearing the drive and thought I would do something.

“In 2009 I built a snowman but this year I thought I would create an igloo, but then I just got cracking on this sphinx.

“My kids normally help me but they are all grown up now and have left home.

“We have had quite a few people admiring it and even one or two taking pictures of it during the night. It took me two-and-a-half hours to complete it. I used a saw and then a knife to chisel the face. I’m not really artistic. I never studied art at school or anything like that, but I am quite pleased with it.

“I did have a bit of difficulty with the face – I didn’t think I was going to be able to get it right but it came good in the end.”
