MILNSBRIDGE residents got a surprise yesterday – the canal turned vivid green.

Stretches of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in the centre of the village were a fetching shade of iridescent green.

But fears of pollution were quickly dispelled.

It turns out that British Waterways staff had pumped a dye into the canal to help them with engineering works, having lowered water levels.

A spokesman said: “The dye is biodegradable and totally harmless to wildlife and plants in the waterway.

“It is used to allow engineers to check for leaks and water flow”.

The photos were captured by Examiner reader Paul Lee who said: “It certainly brightened up the canal.”
