THE leader of Kirklees Council has promised more talks on the future of Batley Town Hall.

Clr Robert Light made his pledge after angry residents were evicted from a Town Hall meeting by police after a dispute with council officials.

Now Clr Light has promised a full and thorough programme of public meetings and events aimed at opening up the use of Batley Town Hall by local people and community groups.

He said it will be led by Kirklees Council's Cabinet over the coming months.

Clr Light said the consultation event organised by culture and leisure services officers this week was not part of that programme. Information and written comments made by those who attended would be fed into the programme planned.

"The Cabinet wants to give everyone the fullest opportunity to put forward their views and ideas for getting more people and local groups using the town hall," he said. "We want to do that in a properly structured way so that everyone has the chance to take part in discussing these important matters calmly and constructively.

"Some £200,000 is planned to be invested in improvements and refurbishment of the building, which is at the heart of the community, and will remain so.

"Batley Town Hall belongs to the people of Batley and we are determined to fully involve them in how it can be used for community benefit in the future."
