An 18 ton army tank turned heads when it was put on display in Huddersfield town centre.

The tank was at Hunters Estate Agency in John William Street, Huddersfield.

Director Tim Dickinson said he had decided to organise the event in support of Armed Forces Day, a national event designed to give ordinary people the chance to raise public awareness of the contribution made by those who serve or have served in our armed forces.

He said: “The local authority didn’t organise anything this year so I thought we would do something.

“I own a couple of tanks including an Abbot self-propelled gun which is ex-British service and served on the British Army of the Rhine during the Cold War in the 1980s and which has now been taken out of service.

“We have also given the Huddersfield and District Army Veterans Association a cheque for £1,000 today to help members travel to Ypres next year.

“Today has been great with a lot of interest shown by people. We have been giving out flags and balloons.”
