A TEENAGER told a court how a youth accused of murder borrowed a change of clothes and lighter fluid to burn his bloodied clothing.

The 16-year-old witness, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said defendant Christopher Murphy, 18, had visited his house the day after the murder of taxi driver Mohammad Parvaiz.

He said the Murphy said his boots were "soaked in blood" and he needed a change of clothes.

Mr Parvaiz, of Birkby, was beaten to death in Field Head, Golcar, last July.

The young witness told Leeds Crown Court he had seen Murphy put his clothes in a carrier bag he had given the defendant.

He added Murphy had asked for some lighter fuel.

The young witness said: "He just wanted to get rid of his clothes. He couldn't wear them because he'd got blood on them."

He added Murphy appeared 'jumpy' and 'shaken'.

The witness said he had lent Murphy jeans, a hooded top, socks and trainers. In a police interview the 16-year-old witness said he hadn't wanted to lend Murphy clothes but he "couldn't say no."

Defending Murphy, Sophie Drake said: "You must have realised giving him clean clothes was a very bad thing?"

The witness replied: "At the time I did but I was put on the spot. I wasn't thinking."

He added Murphy and his girlfriend had used his phone and computer to search for a bed and breakfast because they knew the police would be looking for them.

The teenage witness said he had also met a 16-year-old co-defendant in the street the same day.

The 16-year-old co-accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the witness he had thrown a brick through the taxi window and that he and the five other defendants had beaten and stamped on Mr Parvaiz.

The witness said the 16-year-old co-accused had seen that Mr Parvaiz had died on the news. He said the 16-year-old seemed uneasy and "like he couldn't believe it". But he said he did not appear flustered, thinking nothing would come of it.

Under cross examination the witness admitted he had not seen any blood on Murphy's boots. He also admitted to drinking and smoking a small amount of cannabis that day.

Murphy, Graeme Slavin, 18, two 17-year-olds and one 16-year-old deny murder.

Co-defendant Michael Hand, 19, was absent after pleading guilty on Monday.

The trial continues.
