A CAMPAIGN to stamp out hunger in elderly patients has been celebrated.

Age Concern launched the Hungry to be Heard drive after exposing the national scandal of malnourished elderly patients in hospital.

They aimed to tackle the lack of assistance given to those who are unable to manage on their own.

The success of the campaign was celebrated at Sundale House in Deighton with a tea party for members.

Laura Mantinan, marketing and fundraising co-ordinator for Age Concern Kirklees, said: “Huddersfield Royal Infirmary are doing an awful lot to implement the initiative and are really going some way to make a difference.

“Dewsbury and Huddersfield dietetics departments are working with us to ensure older people get the food they need on hospital wards in Kirklees.

“Malnutrition of older people is a top priority for us and it’s reassuring to know that this partnership is pushing standards up as we step up our efforts.

“The reaction of members has been very positive, they are really happy the issue is being addressed.”

Age Concern Kirklees hope the initiative will be taken up by residential and care homes so more pensioners get the benefit.
