KIRKLEES road safety bosses have signed up to a West Yorkshire-wide plan to cut speeding-related deaths.

The ambitious project will see all five of the county's road-safety teams pool resources and experience to try to hammer down the number of deaths from speeding on the region's roads.

Named the West Yorkshire Speed Management Strategy, the plan aims to get drivers to pay attention to road conditions and speed limits and drive accordingly.

Steve Thornton, strategy group chairman, said: "Speed is a contributory factor in just over one-third of all collisions in West Yorkshire and is by far the biggest single contributor to casualties on our roads.

"It is anticipated that this `joined-up' approach will produce a marked and measurable reduction in the number of road casualties."
