A TEAM of Elland flagbearers has won second place in a national championship.

The Anchormen Colour Guard – who perform routines bearing standards and flags – took second place in the Junior National Winterguard Championships.

The contest was held at Brentwood Leisure Centre in Essex and Elland lost out on the top spot to the Coventry- based Guardsmen by just a point in a close-run final.

The Anchormen’s routine, called The Talent Show, was based around the music from films Dreamgirls and Hairspray.

The show was designed by chief instructor Tony Lees and performed by members aged between seven and 12.

The drum section of the troupe also took fifth place in a percussion competition held at the same venue. It was their first entry to the contest.

The Anchormen are based at the Savage Centre in Elland. For more information about the team, contact Mick Moss on 01422 835363.
